I am entering a charity no-limit touney. $20 buy is, 250-300 people, top prize is about a dime. Here is how it is set up:

everyone gets $55 in chips. Blinds start at 1/2 and are raised every 20 minutes. In other words, it's not going to go around the table very often (if even once) before the blinds are raised. And the initial $55 in chips is not an awful lot in comparison to where the blinds will be.

I do usually try to play "tight/aggressive". I'm thinking the best strategy is to play a little looser than normal and very, very aggressively. Reason being, you need to build up a nice stack quick or you risked getting put into a lot of danger with the blinds. I figure it is better to get knocked out quick by a bad beat when you have a decent shot to take the lead, rather than getting nickle and dimed out of the tourney because you can't keep up with the blinds...

any suggestions?

I play loose, very, very agressive against tight passive players and even some tight agressive players. You can steal so much that it generally pays off. You have to choose your spots, but I go for more blinds steals more than most.

BUT, this being a charity tournament with that many players you must be careful that you are not trying this against loose players. Your bluff might scare off top pair bad kicker when a tight players has it vs your blanks. But a loose player will call you down anyway, so the bluff move not only often doesn't work, but you can quickly go broke.

I would say that anytime you really think you have the best of it bet for value more (you are likely going to get called with worse hands). And you should likely push anytime you think you are 50/50. Also you might want to play your loose concept by seeing more flops by limping if you think you will play better on the flop than other players.

Being a charity event w/probable alcohol served; would think it would be very loose and would play accordingly. People get brave w/liquid courage and cheap stakes. Bluffing will get you killed in this setting.

I am assuming a very loose field. Probably a lot of amateurs or poor players. Like Sammy said, bluffing probably will not get me there, as I am assuming that we are going to have a lot of people with the "see the flop at any cost" mentality, and others who will stay in with any high pair.

Drunkguy-

It's nice that this is for charity but the structure is horrible for a decent player. A tight and aggressive player will not win this event. The blinds are too high, go up too quickly and initial stack too low to wait for great hands.

I would lossen my staring hand requirements and see cheap flops. At that point, you should be able to outplay your opposition.

Good luck.
